Danville Wildlife Trapper Tip of the Month:
Ways To Keep Skunks Out Of My Garden
Keeping Skunks Out of the Garden
Your garden is a place of relaxation and beauty. It is where you grow everything from flowers to vegetables to whatever it is you dream of having. You want it to be perfect.
There are many things that can hurt your garden, but one of the most troublesome is skunks. Skunks will dig at and around gardens if they get on to your property.
Like any other wild animal, they want to find food. To them, your garden is full of delicious meal opportunities – they just have to find it. Through digging and sniffing, they want to grab any food they can.
This will turn your garden upside down, leading to the death of plants and to the destruction of much of the garden. You need a way to keep the skunks out of your garden for good.
A Good Barrier
Around the outside of your property, you want a good fence. The fence will keep them out of your property from the start so that they do not have a chance to get in and do damage.
If you already have a fence, look around the perimeter for any holes or damage. The skunk got in somewhere, and you want to close that up. Remove any possibility of the skunk entering your yard.
Have a barrier or fence around the garden, too. A little garden fence, typically of wire, can keep the skunks from entering the garden even if they are in your yard.
With these type of fence, you want to make it secure and high quality. It should not give the skunks any ability to break through, at least not easily.
Removing Food
Food, like pet food, attracts skunks. If you leave out any food with a strong odor, it may catch their attention. Your yard suddenly becomes a desirable place to go for them.
Pick up and remove any potential food sources around the yard. Keep it clean and keep it free of what skunks like.
Obviously, you cannot do this with insects or your garden, but you can minimize the likelihood of them wanting to enter your property.
There are several other options available to you, all with varying effectiveness. Flood lights, sprinklers, and predator urine are all popular options. Any of these can help you to scare away skunks or stop them from wanting to enter in the first place.
